Ravichandran Ashwin About this sound pronunciation (born 17 September 1986) is an Indian national cricket team player, who plays for India and Tamil Nadu cricket team. He is a right-handed batsman and right arm off-break bowler. He is the only bowler of recent times apart from Ajantha Mendis of Sri Lanka to bowl the carrom ball.[1] His bowling shows a lot of variation.

Early years and personal life

Ashwin was born into a Hindu Brahmin family.[2] He lives in West Mambalam,Chennai.[2] He did his schooling from Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan and St. Bede's. He attended SSN College of Engineering and graduated with a B.Tech in Information Technology. On 13 November 2011, Ashwin married his childhood friend Preethi Narayanan.[3]. Ashwin’s father Ravichandran was a fast bowler who played competitive cricket in Tamil Nadu.[4]

T20 Career

Ashwin made his debut against Andhra Pradesh in Twenty20 cricket.[5] He plays first-class cricket for Tamil Nadu and has played in the Duleep Trophy for South Zone.[6] He was nicknamed "Dada" during his U-19 days while touring Dharamsala.He has recently married.
He plays for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.[7]
He became the highest wicket taker of the 2010 Champions League Twenty20 tournament for Chennai Super Kings in the tournament with 13 wickets and was adjudged as the player of the tournament and also got the Golden Wicket.[8] During IPL 2011 auction which happened on 5 and 6 January 2011, he has been retained by Chennai Super Kings for the amount of 850000$.[9] Presently, he is the economical bowler in Indian Premier League history with an economy rate of 6.12.[10]

ICC Cricket World Cup 2011
Later, in that month he was selected in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 squad to represent India along with the spinners Harbhajan Singh and Piyush Chawla. He played 2 matches for India in that series. He made his World Cup debut on 20 March 2011 against the West Indies with bowling figures of 10-0-41-2. He played his second world cup match against Australia in the second quarter final at Ahmadabad (10-1-52-2).[13]
On 16 March 2012, he got his 50th ODI wicket at an overall average of 29.00.

In November 2011, he made his Test debut earning the test cap from Sachin Tendulkar along with Umesh Yadav against West Indies, with figures of 27-4-81-3 in the 1st innings and 21.3-5-47-6 in the 2nd innings.[14] Ashwin was awarded the Man of the Series for his performances with both ball and bat. In the third Test (also Ashwin's third Test), he scored his maiden international century, helping India to a draw.
Ashwin was given the Dilip Sardesai award for becoming the Man of the Series in his debut Test series and a cheque for INR5 lakh.[15]
Ashwin subsequently toured Australia for India's four-Test series in 2011–12. He played in three of the Tests (being left out of the side for the third Test on the pace-friendly WACA Ground), taking nine wickets at an average of 62.77.[16]

Ashwin took 18 wicktes at average of 13.11 in two test matches against New Zealand and become Man of the Series.
  • 1st Test: His match figures of 12/85 in Hyderabad was the best by an Indian spinner against NZ bettering S Venkataraghavan's 47 year old record set on 19 March 1965 with match figures of 12/152 in Delhi. [17] Ashwin's figures of 12/85 is the second best performance against NZ in a test match behind West indies CA Walsh's performance in Wellington on 10 February 1995.[18].
  • 2nd Test:In Second Inning he took 5 wicktes for 69 runs.
Ashwin's superb bowling show brought him in the league of top 20 in ICC's Test Rankings.He achieved his career best test ranking of 18 after the series against New Zealand[19] and 9th in the all-rounder rankings.[20]

Records

  • Ravichandran Ashwin became the third Indian cricketer to score a century and take five wickets in same test match.[21] He achieved this feat in his third test where he made 103 and took 5/156 in the first innings. Other Indians to have done this are Vinoo Mankad in 1952 and Polly Umrigar in 1962. This feat had only been achieved 26 times previously in world cricket, the last occasion being by Jacques Kallis in 2002.
  • He is also the fourth Indian cricketer to be awarded the Man of the Match (MoM) on debut. Other Indians to have done this are Narendra Hirwani, Pravin Amre and R.P. Singh. Ashwin registered the 2nd best bowling on debut by an Indian bowler with 9/128 performance, behind Hirwani’s 16-wicket world record debut performance.
